Teri Genovese Photography Blog bio picture

in a nutshell:

I am a documentarian at heart.  Observing the subtle beauty amidst everyday life, near and far, inspires me to no end.  I specialize in creating genuine portraits of childhood and families, and dream of documenting people and cultures around the world.

I received a BA in photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2003, where I learned the traditional craft - in the darkroom.  My work has since been published in the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Parent Magazine, Los Angeles Times.com, Chicago Public Radio.com, and countless Chicago Children's Museum publications.

I currently live and work in Grand Rapids, Michigan and travel regularly to Los Angeles, California (where my business began).  I live for yoga, hiking, weekend road trips, a good book, simplicity, and anything chocolate.  :)

Platte River Lake Michigan Photography

last summer, i fell in love with the state i grew up in and now i know for sure, the summer is so much sweeter after you’ve endured a little (or a very long) winter..
the following photographs were taken on our drive back to Grand Rapids from the Sleeping Bear Dunes last September, where the Platte River meets Lake Michigan. we are totally going to get paddle boards asap, so we can be like this awesome family..

March 20, 2012 - 1:03 pm Jennie - what a beautiful post!!! would like to talk to you about your travel schedule in August and if you would be willing to travel to Hilton Head, SC. I'll call you once we're settled in SF, but just wanted to run it past you in case it was a no-go from the start.

March 20, 2012 - 1:34 pm Teri Genovese - that is definitely a possibility, Jennie! i would LOVE to make that happen. spread the word if you have any family/friends who might also be interested, but yes, let's talk once you're settled! :)

March 20, 2012 - 3:20 pm Jennie - awesome! we are meeting up with the whole McCashin clan - it would be a lot of people...10 adults, 11 children (aged 16 down to Teddy being the smallest). I'll fill you in on the dates and what we all might be looking for, and perhaps you could provide an estimate for travel fees and session(s).

March 20, 2012 - 5:00 pm Teri Genovese - Sounds good! I did something similar for a family/friend group in La Jolla a few years ago. I'm excited to hear more! Good luck with the move. I've been thinking about you guys!

March 20, 2012 - 7:02 pm Jennie - This has me so excited! Thank you for your thoughts - moving is such a pain (as you are well aware), but we're psyched for the new adventure. Talk to you soon.

the pictured rocks + a friendly reminder to print your digital photos :)

Pictured Rocks Boat Tour - Black and White Photograph by Teri Genovese

If you’ve ever wondered what the northern coast of Michigan’s UP (Upper Peninsula) looks like, these are for you! We celebrated our 6 year anniversary last August with a road trip to the Pictured Rocks overlooking Lake Superior. The water really is that vibrantly turquoise, crystal clear, and incredibly cold. You can ask my husband who had to make sure. His purple lips and uncontrollable convulsions for a good hour was proof enough for me.

Why the untimely post from… LAST SUMMER? ….

March 14, 2012 - 7:25 am Jennie - Beautiful photos & definitely a landscape I would love to see someday! What are your favorite bookmaking sites? I've used Blurb once, but would love to hear your reviews of others.

March 14, 2012 - 7:31 am Teri Genovese - Thanks Jennie! It is a beautiful site to see. Up to this point, I've only used my professional book vendors. I've just recently decided to branch out to some consumer options like Pinhole Press for my personal work... simply for cost reasons and I'd like to find a simpler workflow for my personal snapshots so I don't procrastinate as long. ;) Like you say, I get "analysis paralysis" when it comes to my own photos... Too many photos, too little time. As I branch out and try some different book companies, I will definitely share my review!

March 14, 2012 - 7:33 am Teri Genovese - p.s. What did you think about Blurb? I've looked at their site plenty of times, but I've never ordered a book.

March 14, 2012 - 9:06 am Jennie - I would have theeeee hardest time selecting photos from your collections! I can only imagine if my snapshots resembled the beauty of yours! I liked Blurb. I used it to make a book for my folks. I definitely remember it taking me a while, but that might just be because of the format (or lack thereof) that I used. I didn't use a template and had to crop each image & design each page. I had a bit more time & focus back then, I guess. But like I said on fb, I was extra pleased with my pinhole project, so maybe I'll try them next!

hotel tjampuhan / ubud, bali / pure bliss.

Hotel Tjampuhan; Ubud, Bali; Bali Travel Photography

as i look out from our porch, i see nothing but green upon green upon green. our room is called Beji 2 and you enter through the squeaky, traditional Balinese carved doors, which lock from the inside with a simple piece of wood. i feel like i am someplace at another time entirely. someplace imaginary. from the labrynth of stairways leading you every-which-way to the river rushing below, i certainly could never have dreamed of a place quite like this..

Tea with a Prince + Holy Springs in Amed + A Ceremonial Cock Fight…

Bali Travel Photographs - Prince of Pelitian

this ceremonial cock fight was a very spontaneous stop en route to Amed in the village of Sidemen. i was engulfed by the complexity of it all. there was so much going on in every direction, i hardly noticed the actual ‘cock fight.’

Life is an Offering: The Anatomy of a Balinese Prayer Offering..

Bali Documentary Photographs: Balinese Prayer Offerings

the phrase “life is an offering” was painted on the side of a building somewhere between Kuta and Ubud. it caught my eye on our very first day and, in that moment, i knew we were someplace very special.. i couldn’t wait to understand more.

Welcome to Bali / An Introduction..

Bali Travel Documentary Photographs: Holy Water Temple Prayer, Amed

at 1am on Sunday, May 8th after about 36 hours of travel, we landed in Bali, Indonesia. within the first day alone, i was moved to tears as i absorbed our new surroundings.. struggling with how in the world i would capture the pure magic of this place, these soulful people, and this beautiful culture, unlike any other, in just 10 days..

..but i tried, oh i tried.

June 21, 2011 - 10:47 am Arnold Margolin - Your blog site was sent to me by Jennie McCashin, who was my next door neighbor in Pasadena, until I moved to NYC in mid-April. She thought I would be interested in your photos, since I spent this past February and March in Bali. I must say, you have certainly captured that aspect you went looking for. Being a comedy writer, I focused more on the ridiculous and the sublime. Anyway, thank you for your photos and commentary and I look forward to hearing and seeing more.

June 21, 2011 - 11:24 am Teri - Hi Arnold - Thank you for your thoughtful comment.. I really appreciate it and would be very interested in reading your comedy writing! I hope you had an amazing time in Bali, as well.

August 1, 2011 - 9:21 am Marnee - Hi Teri -- It's Marnee from Bali Institute. I just returned from my 3 month Bali journey. Which, by the way, didn't feel like enough time to digest or capture it all. Your work is AMAZING! I am so looking forward to following your upcoming posts... Oh how I longed for a "real" camera (and some photography talent) while I was there.
